This book is like a hand-painted scroll depicting a story in scenes. In kimonos, sandals, with long black hair and dreams of a better life, Japanese women board a ship taking them to San Francisco. There, they will meet husbands whom they have only seen once in a photograph. Also awaiting them is nostalgia for their homeland, poverty, hard work in the fields or laundries, constant care for their children, discrimination from the whites, and deportation to internment camps against the backdrop of the looming war. Otsuka tells the story of all these women at once, using the plural form and turning the sum of all these lives into a heart-wrenching human tragedy, symbolizing exile and collective deception. The incredible choir of narrators seems to speak in verses filled with strong emotions, life truths, and wisdom.
