Colm Toibin is one of the leading figures in contemporary Irish literature, a subtle and versatile writer whose books have repeatedly made it to the Booker Prize shortlist and received significant literary awards. For "Brooklyn," a quiet story of a young woman and her search for self, where emotions simmer deep within and only ripple to the surface through hints, implications, and unspoken words, the author received the Costa Prize. In 2015, John Crowley adapted this novel into a film based on a screenplay co-written by Toibin and Nick Hornby. The protagonist of "Brooklyn," Eilis, sets off in search of work and change from her familiar and cozy hometown of Enniscorthy to the unfamiliar New York. There, she struggles with nostalgia, seeks her place in the new country, encounters love, makes difficult decisions, and starts to settle in when sad family news calls her back to Ireland. All immigrant stories may seem similar at first glance, but they never repeat each other. "Brooklyn" is a minor odyssey where there are no great passions, but everything is imbued with feelings, poignant and persistent, the story of a young woman's journey back and forth, from Enniscorthy to Brooklyn and back to Enniscorthy, in search of herself, her independence, her place, but ultimately her home, from which it is impossible to escape and where it is impossible to return.
