In the early 70s, the American Slavists of Ellande and Karl Proffer created the Ardis publishing house, where they printed in Russian and translated into English books, which were not published in the USSR for censorship reasons. During one of their trips to the USSR, they met Joseph Brodsky. When the poet was expelled from the country, it was Karl Proffer who with great difficulty achieved an entry visa to the United States and helped to get the place of a university teacher.
Since 1977, all Russian poetic books by I. Brodsky were published in Ardis. The close relations between Brodsky and the couple of Proferov continued for many years. Before his death, Karl Proffer worked on the memoirs that his widow wanted to publish, but by the will of Brodsky they never saw the light.
In the memoirs of the Ellanda itself, Proffer Fishy, dedicated to Brodsky, also included fragments of Karl notes. The memoirs of E. Proffer Fishley are sometimes emphasized by a poetic nature, admiration for the poetic gift of Brodsky does not prevent her from soberly evaluating some events and facts of his life
