"Bretyer" is the first book of a new detective series by Yulia Yakovleva, set in 1812. The author combines the chosen era with the atmosphere of a modern "cool" detective: Petersburg hussar Murin, who unintentionally becomes a detective, reveals a crime that looks modern - and at the same time possible in any era. It is autumn of 1812, the war is still ongoing, officers from the active army occasionally come to Petersburg - some on leave, some due to injuries. Murin decides to cut short his leave and return to the war. However, circumstances force him to stay: the sister of his regimental comrade Proshin asks for help - her brother has been arrested in a gambling house for the brutal murder of a woman. The girl does not believe that her brother could have done such a thing and asks Murin to find the truth - no matter how bitter it may be. Murin decides to spend the rest of his leave searching for the truth, which turns out to be more cynical than expected. But the real culprit does not escape retribution.
