The novel "The Precipice" (1869) became the conclusion of I. A. Goncharov's "trilogy," which began with "A Common Story" and continued with "Oblomov." All three novels are considered classics of Russian and world literature and continue to be popular among readers. "The Precipice," on which the writer worked for twenty years, is often referred to as an encyclopedia of passions. Goncharov wrote about the main heroine of his novel after its publication: "I was fascinated by the manifestations of passion in the pure and proud nature of a woman and her struggle with it. In general, I was struck everywhere by the process of diverse manifestations of passion, that is, love, which, no matter what they say, has a huge influence on fate... I involuntarily stirred up and exhausted almost all the images of passions in the novel." So, Boris Raisky, a young man leading the life of a free artist, arrives at his estate on the Volga. It is a blessed corner where everything pleases the eye: an old house, the tender greenery of birches and linden trees, the silvery strip of the river, and only the mysterious precipice at the end of the garden frightens the inhabitants of the estate due to the legend associated with it about a jealous husband who killed his wife and her rival...
