Today, it is difficult to imagine the panorama of world history without utopian works. This collection includes some of the best works of this genre: "We", "1984", "Animal Farm", "Fahrenheit 451", "Never Let Me Go", "The Handmaid's Tale".
"We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin was not the first work in this genre, but it definitely became to some extent a "pioneer" of many dystopias of the 20th century. "We" is set in the world of the 32nd century, where names are replaced with letters and numbers, people eat oil-processed foods, the state controls everything, including citizens' intimate lives, and the presence of a soul in a person is a reason to visit a psychotherapist.
"1984" by George Orwell is a novel-warning about the dangers of totalitarianism.
"Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury is a philosophical dystopia, painting a bleak picture of the development of post-industrial society.
"Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro is a poignant book, a novel-parable about the present and the past, causing emotional turmoil and pain, as there is a category of people who live only to be organ donors.
"The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood is a compelling panorama of the future that could begin tomorrow. In this brave new world, women have no right to own property, work, love, read, or write. They cannot run in the mornings, have picnics and parties, or remarry. They are left with only one function. Fredova is a Handmaid. Once a day she can go shopping, but she is not allowed to talk or remember. Once a month she meets with her owner - the Commander - and prays for a healthy child to result from their union. Because in this brave new world, the Handmaid is just a vessel for reproduction.
