As early as the beginning of the 19th century, K.N. Batiushkov wrote about the residents of St. Petersburg, who "look at the splendor of their city with a cold eye, thanks to habit." The everyday hustle and bustle always distracts from beauty, especially if it is in front of your eyes every day. "Big things are seen from a distance" - either in time or space - or through the heightened perception of those who see this beauty for the first time. The same thing happened to me. I was born near the walls of the Borisoglebsky Monastery in the Yaroslavl region, but the realization of its uniqueness came much later and to a certain extent, thanks to its representations in painting. By a twist of fate, finding myself among Moscow artists, I saw through their eyes the high aesthetics of ancient Russian architecture and the extraordinary harmonious connection of the Borisoglebsky architecture with the surrounding landscape, and in the signs of architectural aging and decay - not as evidence of destruction, but as the authenticity of antiquity and the noble painterly patina of time. Time not only leaves material traces on the ancient walls of temples and monasteries. It inevitably immerses them in constantly evolving historical and sociocultural processes, which affect both the existence of ancient Russian architecture and its embodiment in painting, changing the artistic form and developing the figurative-symbolic meanings. The characteristics of perception and representation of the surrounding world specific to a particular period of time predetermine the painterly interpretation and explain the differences in the embodiment of the same monument by artists of different eras. The Borisoglebsky Monastery, in its secluded, almost hermit-like location away from central routes, was seen by few artists, mainly in the second half of the 20th century. Nevertheless, the visual material collected in this book covers more than 300 years chronologically, allowing us to trace the development of the painterly image of this magnificent monument of ancient Russian architecture over these long years. It is in the images that artists think, embodying the signs of their time, against which they "reproduce not the external signs of architecture, but the mystery of architectural harmony, approaching the stone existence of the ancient monument with artistic thought, penetrating its living, organic soul, embodying its mood, its painterly unity, its artistic individuality." The feeling of love for one's small homeland and, to no lesser extent, the sense of gratitude to the artists who captured its unique beauty, became the impetus for creating this book.
