"If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you" - these words belong to Friedrich Nietzsche, who is rightfully considered one of the predecessors of existential philosophy. One of its key concepts is the 'borderline state' ('borderline situation') - a state of fear and anxiety in the face of physical 'nothingness' (non-being, death). Only in a borderline situation does true existence reveal itself to us: we become ourselves.
Jean-Paul Sartre, the most famous representative of existentialism, explored the influence of borderline states, fear of 'nothingness' in various areas of human existence: in romantic relationships, in social ('worldly') contexts, in the search for one's 'self'. Sartre's most famous works on this topic are presented in this book.
