A joint project of the Russian State Library and the publishing house 'SNEG'. The publication contains fundamental research by Dr. of Historical Sciences, book scholar, and chief scientific researcher of the Russian Book Chamber, Yevgeny Lvovich Nemirovsky. A separate brochure presents reference material.
In order to implement the project, work was carried out to create about 2,500 photographs of rare books from the world library fund, allowing to see real rarities. The unique edition includes numerous illustrations, engravings, and paintings by great masters.
A fundamental work on the main keepers of information, carriers of the world's religions, sources of enlightenment and education, repositories of knowledge - books. The history of the emergence of writing is presented, starting from the stage of creating written texts by different peoples. The Book of books - the Bible, which plays an unprecedented role in world culture, is examined in detail. Ancient writings, medieval codices, handwritten Western European and Slavic books are studied. Great attention is paid to Dutch printers Elzevirs, books published during the Enlightenment era, and literary works included in the golden fund of world culture.
