In February 1934, the Chelyuskin ship, sent to conquer the Northern Sea Route, was crushed by ice. The crew and passengers, among whom were women and children, did not succumb to panic. They managed to unload everything necessary for life on the ice, arranged a tent camp and lived in it for more than two months, maintaining self -control and faith in salvation. Scientists have observed Arctic and gave lectures on various topics. Special teams regularly cleared landing sites for aircraft, illiterate (and such were) taught to read and write. They released the wall newspaper We will not give up.
The real heroes of the Chelyuskin epic are Soviet polar pilots. For the first time in the history of world aircraft, in severe weather conditions, under the strongest winds and forty -degree frost, they made many search flights, found an ice camp and took 102 people to a large land. And all this on airplanes that did not have closed cabs and not equipped with navigation devices
