The well-known writer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Nikolai Alexandrovich Leykin, carefully notes and vividly describes in his stories the characteristic signs of the time, which makes his works not only a whirlwind of images and situations, but also a kind of encyclopedia of Russian life at the turn of the centuries. This collection covers life in all its diversity, and many ironically played themes, such as superstitions, gossip, family quarrels, poverty and destitution, bureaucracy, ostentation in charity, and widespread drunkenness, resonate with readers even now. Scenes typical of that period are played out: the relationships between impoverished nobility and the new masters of life - the merchants. The limitations of the latter and their desire to solve any problem with money are satirized, albeit in a good-natured way - for example, buying the lead role in a play.
