Sofia Sinitskaya is the winner of the Gogol Prize, a finalist for the "Big Book," "Yasnaya Polyana," "National Bestseller," and "Nose" awards. The title of her new novel refers to Baudelaire's "Midday Song" - "Black Siberia" is what the poet calls the state of depression, melancholy. The protagonist of Sinitskaya's novel, French volunteer Gaston Mushabier, flees from his existential anguish to the southeast of Ukraine, where he tries to find meaning in life and break free from the tormenting grip of the mental illness called "Black Siberia" in the war zone.
