To some extent, a prosperous state of affairs in society and faith in progress help to ward off gloomy thoughts. Conversely, the collapse of parliamentarism and the weakness of the liberal-democratic regime reinforce in citizens, especially in the intelligentsia, a complex of national inferiority. In these conditions, the archetype of romantic thinking is quite clearly superimposed on the worldview: disbelief in social, industrial, political, and scientific progress leads to disillusionment with modern society and ultimately to disillusionment with humanity. Hence the mood of hopelessness, despair, 'cosmic pessimism,' and 'worldly sorrow.' The pessimistic philosophy of E.M. Cioran, in its main parameters, continues the tradition of Nietzsche. Perhaps he is the only philosopher after Nietzsche who masterfully wields the art of the aphorism. Like Nietzsche, he 'philosophizes poetically.' But at the same time, he does so polemically: like Nietzsche, all his phrases are polemical, and his entire thought is dialectically contradictory. Cioran's work is thoroughly antimonological and antidogmatic. Regarding him, as with no other philosopher, the statement by Paul Valéry is applicable: 'The most significant thoughts are those that contradict our feelings.'
