Bishop Porfiry (Uspensky) (1804-1885) is an outstanding representative of the Russian Orthodox Church and the most interesting personality of the XIX century. Russian Orientalist, vistentologist, traveler, Bible translator, the famous archaeologist and recognized authority in the study of the Christian East. Collecting, studying and preserving the heritage of Christian written sources is one of the parties to his activities. Bishop Porphiri (Assumption) left behind the richest heritage, which today is not fully studied and expects his time and understanding. He managed to collect and take into Russia a large collection of ancient books and manuscripts in the Greek, Syrian, Arabic, Georgian and other eastern languages ​​and in church-Slavic, shortly before his death, he bequeathed all his collection of volumes of the ancient books and manuscripts of the Academies of Sciences and the Imperial Public library. The bishop archive is stored in the St. Petersburg Office of the Archive of Sciences, Foundation 118. Among the many of his merit for the benefit of Orthodoxy and in the study of the Christian East there is a special one. This is the creation of the first Russian spiritual mission in Jerusalem.
