His first book "Columns" (1929) Nikolai Zabolotsky once and for all approved his name in Russian poetry. The recognized theorist of the verse and literary critic Yu. N. Tynyanov gave the young poet his book with the inscription: "First Poet of our days." But the "columns" became the only book that N. Zabolotsky managed to make himself. The poet’s innovative experiments were subjected to severe ideological criticism. In the future, he had three more collections of poems, strongly cut by censorship. Having experienced an extremely dramatic fate (eight years of imprisonment in the Gulag), Nikolai Zabolotsky, after a long, forced silence, managed to return to poetry again and created dozens of lyrical masterpieces in the 1940-1950s - already in the classical manner. Connoisseurs of literature during their lifetime put Zabolotsky’s flush with Tyutchev, Boratynsky. And one of our contemporaries thus determined his place in Russian literature: "Boratynsky - became the largest poet of the 19th century in the XX, Zabolotsky - will become the largest poet of the 20th century in the XXI".
The book of Valery Fedorovich Mikhailov is the first biography in the series "ZhZL", dedicated to the great Russian poet, a wonderful translator Nikolai Alekseevich Zabolotsky
