The end of the XIX - beginning of the XX century was a special period in the history of the Russian Empire. It was a time of painful spiritual searches and at the same time unprecedented patriotic upsurge. A huge number of people did not see any other meaning of their lives, except for serving the Fatherland. They tried to gain worldwide fame and well -deserved glory to the state with diligent labors and a military feat. One of the heroes of this time was an officer of the Russian Imperial Army, nicknamed the comrades of Mazepa. The cornet of the Life Guards of the Hussar Regiment Alexander Ksaverich Bulatovich at the age of 26 will become a confidant of Negus Abyssinia Menelik II, at the age of 30-the hero of the Russian-Chinese war of 1898-1901. Even if his life ended at the beginning of the twentieth century, and to that there were many prerequisites, he would no doubt go down in history as an outstanding discoverer and researcher of Africa. But he was destined to live another life and be noted in history in a completely different capacity and under a different name.
