This book is a translation into the Russian language of the biography of Vladimir Köppen, compiled on the basis of his personal notes and supplemented by his daughter Elsa Vegener.
The book was first published in 1955 in Germany. The Köppen Laboratory at the Institute of Earth Sciences of St. Petersburg State University, created with the support of a megagagant of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Russian Federation, is named in his honor and is designed to perpetuate the name of this wonderful person.
Outstanding scientist Vladimir Petrovich Köppen made a great contribution to the development of meteorology. His active scientific activity covers the period from 1868 to 1940. Until the last days of his long (93 years), Vladimir Petrovich remained an active and energetic person. V. Köppen developed a number of new directions in the development of meteorology, as well as the classification of climate of the globe, which has not lost its significance at the present time. The scientist was distinguished by the outstanding abilities of the experimental researcher, phenomenal hard work and a universal approach to solving a variety of problems. He was a full member of the Russian Geographical Society since 1872 and his honorary member since 1927.
The book presented to the reader includes two parts: the period of Köppen’s life until 1903, which he spoke about in his diary, and the later period described by his daughter and wife of another famous meteorologist and climatologist Alfred Elsa Veener-Köppen
