Since the time of Machiavelli, the image of a politician in the minds of society has been associated with hypocrisy, cruelty and unprincipled in the struggle for power and its preservation. An example of Vaclav Gavel proves that a person of a different type is capable of being an authoritative politician - an intellectual who preaching moral resistance to evil and "life in truth". The writer and playwright, Gavel became the leader of the bloodless revolution, the last president of Czechoslovakia and the first independent Czech Republic. Following the formula of his hero "There is no life outside the story and history outside of life", Ivan Belyaev wrote a biography of Havel, each event in whose life is woven into the cultural and political context of the entire 20th century. In front of the reader, the Habsburg empire collapses, in the new Czechoslovak state the father and uncle of the hero will build "Czech Hollywood", soon subordinate to Hitler, for another 30 years, Soviet troops will suppress the Prague Spring, and Vaclav Gavel will become one of the most famous dissidents of Eastern Europe.
