Deborah Feldman grew up in the ultra-organizational community of Satmar Hasids in Brooklyn, New York. This is the most strict and conservative direction of modern Judaism: it is forbidden to read non -religious books in the community, speak English, wear modern clothes, use the Internet, get a secular education, watch movies, attend theater and library. All spheres of the life of the community (and women - especially women - especially) are strictly regulated by religious requirements, the laws of the secular state are almost important. At the age of 17, the Deborah was married to a man with whom she was familiar with only half an hour - it is not surprising that marriage does not bring happiness.
