Pavel Fedorovich Karev (1894-?), Participant in the First World War, non-commissioned officer. As part of the 2nd company of the Special Infantry Regiment (1st Brigade) of the Russian Expeditionary Corps, he was sent to the front to the French province of Shampan, received a certificate of a sniper school in the Chalon-on-Marne camp. His personal observations told in this book recreate events that inevitably led to the so -called decomposition of the army: conflicts of officers and lower ranks, bodily punishments, low levels of medical care, evasion of the authorities from participating in battles, sleepless nights in the battles under German shelling, News from the Motherland about the renunciation of the king, the refusal of the Provisional Government to take measures to return the soldiers to Russia. Among the supporters of the cessation of the war was Karev himself - he found himself in the center of the Lakurtinsky tragedy, when all those who disagree from the Russian Corps in order to “tame” were subjected to artillery shelling (La -Curtin camp, September 1917).
Further, Karev in the special military contingent was sent to North Africa. The author in detail unfolds a picture of the Russian military stay there - hard labor, bullying, torture, death.
For the first time, P. Karev’s memoirs were published in 1937. The new edition was supplemented by the preface of the Doctor of Historical Sciences A.V. Sazanova and T.G. Borodinskaya
