Vasily Alekseevich Bilbasov (1838-1904) - Russian historian and journalist. After the closure of the newspaper Voice in 1883, which Bilbasov edited for 12 years, he devoted himself to the study of Catherine II. Having collected and processed previously unknown documentary materials on the history of her board, he presented the image of Catherine-West to the Russian society, which differed from the common tales generated by a long ban on access to the empress’s personal documents. The first volume of the book saw the light in 1890 and was highly appreciated by historians and readers. The second volume, which came out in 1891, was removed from the sale and destroyed by censorship at the direction of Alexander III, who was angry with some published materials, considering the unauthorized disclosure of the individual details of the life of the imperial surname. The author had to reduce his work so that the prohibited book, the interest in which would not disappear in subsequent years, reached the reader. And finally, in 1900 it was published in Berlin in Russian without censorship passes. Bilbasov’s work is published in a full author"s edition
