The author of the book is the senior major of state security (corresponded to the general’s army rank), an illegal resident of Soviet intelligence in France, Austria, Italy (1933-1937), a resident of the NKVD and the Republican Security Government in Spain (1937-1938), a high-ranking employee in the central apparatus NKVD. Thanks to his official position, he was well aware of how the 1937 political repression mechanism was launched and functioned. And in June 1938, rightly fearing for his life, he fled to the west. Many years later, he spoke in detail about what Stalin went to to hold power in his hands
