The formation of a system of Russian personal names began in the pre -Christian period of the history of Russia.
The adoption by Russia from the Byzantium of Christianity led to the emergence of completely new, alien names, inextricably linked with the sacrament of baptism on the Russian land: according to tradition, baptism is accompanied by a person’s advent of a new, Christian name. The name was carried out in the name of the revered saint according to liturgical books - the mines, in which church services were signed for each month of the year with the glorification of one or another saint on the day of its commemoration. And only three female names, belonging to the early Christian holy martyrs, were literally translated into Russian and became used in Russian language transcription.
These names are faith, hope, love. The harmonious name of their Holy Mother remained unequer to Greek and is known to us as Sofia (Sophia), which means "wisdom".
