Monograph O.A. Valkova is devoted to the history of the scientific activity of women in the Russian Empire from the end of the XVIII to the beginning of the twentieth century inclusive. The book considers the process of gradual integration of women into the sphere of professional scientific activity in Russia since the end of the 18th century and throughout the 19th century, having captured an increasing number of participants over time. What forms and species did the scientific work of women take during this period? What legislative acts influenced it? What are the ways of interacting women-amateur sciences with a professional scientific community? How did the wide layers of an educated society relate to women-scientists and their activities? These and many other issues are raised in the book. The study is based on an extensive circle of historical sources, primarily archival, first introduced into scientific circulation. The author also found and used a unique, previously unknown statistical material characterizing Russian women who were engaged in natural sciences in the second half of the XIX - early twentieth century.
