This is the first detailed biography of the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, contemporary and rival of Hegel, the interlocutor of Goethe, the witness of the Napoleonic wars and revolutions. This lonely gloomy man, who considered optimism to be a “vile view”, which was relentlessly thinking about human happiness and studying oriental philosophy, created his own teaching in which man and nature are united, and enriched humanity by a nearby conjecture that far ahead of his time.
