Captivity during the war is an event that puts a soldier in a difficult position, often implies a threat from not only the enemy, but also his state, and at the same time makes him the owner of a unique point of view. The memoirs of Georgy Nikolayevich Satirov (1904-1981), who fought in the People’s Militia in the Crimea and fell into German captivity at the very beginning of the Nazi offensive, contain his memories of the stay for prisoners of war in Germany in 1942-1945.
The author describes in detail the life of the camps, the attitude of prisoners to the work performed, to camp employees and the local population, relations among prisoners, conflicts on national grounds, and the willingness of some to cooperate with the Nazis. The figures of prisoners, fascist overseers and representatives of the camp administration were written out very expressively to them, and erudition, observation and talent of the narrator make these memoirs not only with valuable evidence, but also an extremely exciting reading
