Self -discipline, composure, courage not only helped the Roman emperor Marc Aurelius Antonin (121-180), or, as the descendants called him, the “philosopher on the throne”, cope with the hardships of the camping life, rejection of war and the torment of loneliness, but allowed him to give a complete form the teachings of the Stoics and become influential of the philosophers of ancient Rome. He, the ancient Roman ruler, the enemy and, albeit relatively moderate, but still a consistent persecutor of Christians, became one of the most cited authors for teachers of the Church and influenced all Christian thinkers from the blissful Jerome to L. N. Tolstoy
