Zinaida Nikolaevna Gippius (according to her husband Merezhkovskaya, 1869 - 1945, Paris) - Russian poetess and writer, playwright and literary critic, one of the prominent representatives of the Silver Age, the ideologist of Russian symbolism. The beginning of the First World War made a difficult impression on Hippius, it sharply opposed the participation of Russia in it. The end of 1916 Gippius and her husband Merezhkovsky were held in Kislovodsk, and in January 1917 they returned to Petrograd. Their new apartment on Sergievskaya became a real political center, sometimes reminiscent of the "branch" of the State Duma. Merezhkovsky welcomed the February Revolution of 1917, perceived the Provisional Government as a “close” and established friendly relations with Kerensky. Soon their mood changed. The October Revolution was horrified by Merezhkovsky and Hippius: they perceived it as the reign of the Kingdom of Antichrist, the triumph of the "supreme evil". 1918, went under the sign of depression. In diaries, Gippius wrote about hunger. In the winter of 1919, Merezhkovsky and philosophers left for Poland. In 1920, Merezhkovsky, forever left for France.
