The name of the American writer Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) is known even to those who have never read her works. It was she who christened young people who returned from the First World War, lost by a generation. She said that the artist needs not critics, but connoisseurs. She saw the task of her letter in destroying the superficiality of reading perception, to return the word its depth. On this, each in their own way, its other contemporaries, writers and theorists of art, were beating: Joyce, futurists, sorcerers, Oberiuts and many others. But Stein was one of the most radical, and it is no coincidence that she gained the glory of the ancestor of modernism.
Her manner of writing is designed, as it were, for reading aloud, not eyes. In her sentences, punctuation is almost completely absent. “People think without punctuation marks,” wrote G. Stein. In the book "Paris France" (of course, without a comma), Stein describes life in the south of France at the beginning of the Second World War - even at that time, when there was a hope that it would not reach a pan -European war
