Once John Sassend, the author of this book, has forever lost his sense of smell. Around the same time, he began to re-read George Orwell and noticed something strange: Orwell was clearly obsessed with smells. This obsession with pleasant and (often) disgusting smells was noted earlier, but has never been investigated to such an extent. Suserland combines the admiration of Orwell’s “ideal prose” with frank exposure of his shortcomings as a person and his almost masochistic tendency to complicate his life, which, however, often inspired him for the best works.
