The study of Sharon Kovalski is devoted to female crime in Russia in the first years of Soviet power, as well as the formation of Soviet criminology as a science. Since in the process of building socialism, crime, like other “creatures of capitalist exploitation”, did not disappear, a number of scientists - lawyers, doctors, statistics, anthropologists and psychiatrists - was instructed to study its causes and motives in order to fight it more efficiently. The author traces the emergence of criminological principles and theories of female deviant behavior and shows how criminologists managed to conduct innovative sociological studies under the ideological pressure of the authorities. Much attention in the book is paid to "typically female" crimes, their analysis with gender, class and geographical points of view, as well as social attitudes regarding the position of women who were identified during professional discussions
