With the outbreak of Patriotic war, he left the civil service and on October 13, 1812 entered the Grodno Hussar Regiment, with which he participated in many battles in Russia and in a foreign campaign: for the fight under the chashtniks, he received the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree with a bow, participated in the battles under the battles Borisov, under Lucine, Bautzen and others, the capture of Tilsit, Königsberg, Berlin and Paris. October 13, 1812 - Lieutenant, August 18, 1813 - Headquarters -Pro -Migister, September 14, 1814 - Coatmister, October 10, 1814, at the request of Viktor Pavlovich Kochubey, he moved to the Life Guards with the same rank. Due to conflicts with the regiment commander Count Levashov, on the recommendation of Prince Vasilchikov, he moved to the Tver Dragoon regiment, which was in the corps of Count Vorontsov.
