Emperor Nicholas I was a deeply outstanding person and equally contradictory. A heeingly believing Christian, he was deprived of the main Christian virtue - the ability to forgive. Proud of his directness and chivalry, he did not shy away from hypocrisy.
The reign of Nicholas I was equally significant and contradictory. The unprecedented take -off of Russian culture - Pushkin, Gogol, Lermontov, young Dostoevsky. But Pushkin and Lermontov die. Gogol ends life in severe depression. Dostoevsky was sent to hard labor.
