Count A. A. Ignatiev-Major General of the Russian Imperial Army and Lieutenant General of the Red Army, served in military service for 50 years. Since 1908, he worked through intelligence by a military agent (attache) in Denmark, Sweden and Norway, where he established intelligence work, primarily against Germany and Austria-Hungary. In 1912-1917 - a military agent in France, at the same time a representative of the Russian army under the French main apartment. He represented Russia at the first inter-union conference of the Entente powers in Chantilly in July 1915, participated as a member of the Russian delegation and in a number of subsequent conferences of 1915-1916.
