The memoir heritage of the outstanding statesman of the Russian Empire Count Sergei Yulievich Witte (1849–1915) is several volumes. The present publication includes the most interesting fragments from his memoirs regarding both the author’s biography and historical events in which he took an active part. And there were many such events, and all of them were without exaggeration fateful for Russia. As the Minister of Traffic, Witte contributed to the development of railways in the country, as the Minister of Finance achieved the stability and convertibility of the Russian gold ruble, at the head of the Council of Ministers, he largely ensured an unprecedented industrial upsurge in the country. Witte was a subtle diplomat who headed the Russian delegation in negotiations with Japan after the end of the Russo-Japanese War, and a decisive politician, the author of the 1905 October manifesto, which laid the foundation for Russian parliamentarism. Witte"s memoirs contain outstanding assessments and forecasts regarding Russian and world politics, as well as portraits of his contemporaries - emperors Alexander III and Nicholas II, P.A.
