Vladimir Alexandrovich Sukhomlinov (1848–1926) made a dizzying career, becoming the military Minister of the Russian Empire, Adjutant General Nicholas II, a member of the State Council and a gentleman of many domestic and foreign orders. His fall was no less dizzying: at the height of the First World War, he was removed from all posts, accused of treason, arrested, convicted, sentenced to life imprisonment. Miraculously, he managed to emigrate to Germany in 1918.
