One of the three most famous (along with the memoirs of Madame de Steel and the Duchess of Aberantes) Female memoirs about Napoleon belong to the pen of the maids of honor of Empress Josephine.
Memoirs of Mrs. Remuza were published in the late seventies of the XIX century. They immediately aroused great interest and withstood a number of publications. This interest is explained both by the outstanding talent of the author and the era, which is depicted in the memoirs, from 1802 to 1808, i.e. The last years of the consulate and the first years of the empire.
The letters that Clara wrote to her husband, chamberlain and the main truste of theaters, from 1804 to 1813, glow with love for Napoleon. She clearly liked him as a man, and she constantly prayed for his safety. But when she sat down on the memoirs in 1818, she portrayed Napoleon heartless and soulless, she stated that Napoleon was unable to manifest his generosity, and described his "satanic smile".
What happened? What is the reason for this turn? After the divorce of Napoleon’s marriage with Josephine, Clara Remuza found herself in the circle of Talleyrand"s friends and did everything for the restoration of Bourbon. In 1815, the appointment of Klara’s husband was expected to be a prefect. Her son also wanted to go into politics, but the mother, who served Freilina from the first days of the empire, was still under suspicion and therefore had to be "cleansed". Clara wrote her memoirs with the help and with the assistance of Talleyrand. She directed the manuscript to the Higher Parisian spheres and cleared herself from the spot on reputation. But she did not publish them - at that time few decided to pronounce such words as the Empire, the Emperor, and even more than Napoleon.
They were published after half a century by the grandson, supplying a detailed and explaining the preface, comments and additions
