The publication proposed to readers is a biography of a major statesman of the 19th century Mikhail Nikolayevich Muravyov (1796–1866), written by his descendant in the 5th generation of P. A. Fedosov on the basis of archival documents, letters and evidence of contemporaries.
The book considers the history of the Muravyev family, all the periods of the life of the main character are analyzed. The author proposed a multifactorial analysis of the participation of M. N. Muravyov in secret societies. Based on the little -known archival materials, management activities and the results of its governorship in the Mogilev, Grodno and Kursk provinces were described. M. N. Muravyov’s contribution to the creation and formation of the Russian Geographical Society, the content and results of his work at the head of the boundary corps, the Department of Dolves and the Ministry of State Property, are analyzed. A new understanding of his role in the implementation of the reform of 1861 was proposed. Muravyov’s activity to suppress the rebellion and reform in the North-Western Territory in 1863-1865, the leadership of the Karakozov case in 1866 is investigated. The history of relations with Nicholas I and Alexander II, a number of large dignitaries of two reigns, is highlighted.
The author of the book makes an attempt to reconstruct the internal motivation of decisions and actions by M.N. Muravyov at all stages of his life path.
