Alpha and Omega of the artistic work of L. N. Tolstoy are connected with the Caucasus: he wrote his first story "Childhood" in Tiflis in 1851, his last masterpiece "Hadji-Murat", dedicated to the Caucasian War, ended in 1904. For 53 years sharing these dates, the writer directly or indirectly addressed his Caucasian experience and Caucasian material in many art, philosophical and journalistic works, including the novels "War and Peace", "Anna Karenina", "Resurrection". In the Caucasus, the military biography of Leo Nikolaevich began.
A new study by A. V. Tkachev "Leo Tolstoy. Caucasian romance. 1851-1904 "covers the service of Tolstoy in the artillery of the individual Caucasian corps, his participation in the hostilities, which, in conjunction with the previously published monograph Second Lieutenant Sevastopol, dedicated to the events of the Crimean war, with exceptional fullness and thoroughness restores all the vicissitudes of the writer"s military life. A significant part of the study is devoted to the Caucasian environment of Tolstoy, his interest in the history, life and culture of Cossacks and highlanders.
The study realizes a methodically new approach: L. N. Tolstoy"s Caucasian texts are comprehended as a single work, a kind of "Caucasian novel", created for more than half a century that has its own continuous, through topics and motives, their characters, passing under different names from different names from one work to another. An analysis of the totality of Caucasian texts reveals the dialectics of these characters, its dependence on the spiritual development of their creator and historical events of the second half of the 19th century.
The book is intended for everyone who loves the work of L. N. Tolstoy, who is worried about unknown details of his biography
