Moscow state of the XVI-XVII centuries. invariably attracts the attention of researchers for a long time. But still there is no single answer to the question of whether the Russian kingdom remained with all its political, social, cultural institutions still a medieval phenomenon or already belonged to a new time. The author of the book, taking advantage of the successful metaphor of J. Hayzingi, characterizes the era of the last Rurikovich and the first Romanovs as “late autumn of the Middle Ages”, when tradition and novelty not only confronted, but also coexisted with each other, bringing lush fruits. The proposed study is the experience of the cultural history of Russia of the late Middle Ages in the form of essays, the subject of study in which became social and intellectual processes, collective models of perception and symbols. Analyzing state and church documents, monuments of book, architecture, fine art, the author shows that all modernization processes of this time did not lead to “nimble”, but only to the transformation of sociocultural phenomena while maintaining their deep religious content.
The book is addressed to historians, philologists, art critics and culturalists, as well as a wide circle of readers interested in the issues of cultural identity of Russia of the XVI-XVII centuries
