The present publication includes diaries and letters, as well as documentary materials covering the life and creative path of the writer from 1914 to 1940. In fact, this is nothing more than the biography of M. Bulgakov, compiled according to his diaries and epistolary heritage. Among the addressees of his letters are V.V. Veresaev, E. I. Zamyatin, A. M. Gorky, K. S. Stanislavsky, I.V. Stalin. These documents, not intended by the author for publication, recorded a particular life situation and, located in chronological order, with amazing objectivity reflect key moments in the fate and work of the writer. In addition, they contain the most valuable information about the personal qualities and circle of the interests of Bulgakov, about its attitude to the events that took place in Russia, to the nearest environment, the writer and theatrical world
