The book is published in the year of the 240th anniversary of Dr. Fyodor Petrovich Gaaz, who went down in the history of Russia as an outstanding humanist, doctor, healthcare organizer, and defender of the disadvantaged. Absolutely forgetting about himself, he gave all his time and all his forces to the service “unhappy”, converging in their eyes with the view of a simple Russian person. The highest philanthropy brought him wide fame.
Haaz devoted most of his life to charity and mercy, serving the simple Russian people and, in particular, the most vulnerable, most unprotected layers of society - convicted and exiled convicts. It was he who was the first who openly opposed the immoderate and meaningless inhuman in prisons, sought to at least somehow facilitate the fate of convicts.
