In Russian, the name Herod became a household name. Contemporaries hated him and left a very bad memory about him, subsequent generations also did not like him.
In our book, all ancient literary sources about the Herod, the king of Judea, are first collected and re -translated, which makes it possible to study them independently in order to form their own opinion about this historical character. Another task is to collect descriptions of various places in the territory of the modern state of Israel, one way or another associated with the construction of the ruler unprecedented for Judea.
The book is opened by an article by the Israeli historian Mikhail Tuval - he is also the editor -in -chief, then the texts of the sources: Joseph Bvius about the Herod in the Jewish War and the Jewish Antiquities, the Jewish lawships of the Mishna and Talmud era, Greek and Roman authors, early Christian scriptures . The second part is based on the modern achievements of archeology, architecture and anthropology, the essays of Mikhail King about the construction activity of the Jewish king
