This modest and pious woman was accused of all mortal sins: of a criminal connection with Grigory Rasputin, all kinds of conspiracies, espionage in favor of Germany and even in a love affair with Nicholas II. For her proximity to the royal family, she was undergoing serious persecution from the side of the Provisional Government and from the Bolsheviks: she was arrested and interrogated, humiliated, beat and tortured, she sat in prisons and miraculously escaped the execution. In 1920, Vyrubova managed to illegally move to Finland and take refuge in the Valaam monastery, taking tonsure with the name of Maria
