Ostrogorsky Viktor Petrovich (1840–1902), teacher, writer, public figure, editor of the magazines “Education and Training”, “Children"s Reading”, “The World of God”, the author of popular methodological manuals on literature, literary, critical and biographical work, collaborated with The St. Petersburg literacy committee, defended female education.
The memoirs of V.P. Ostrogorsky were first published in the journal Education during the life of the author and twice were reprinted by separate books (1892 and 1914) The memoirist tells about the children"s years in the gymnasium, the youth period at the University of St. Petersburg: professors of the Historical and Philology faculty M. M. Stasyulevich, N. I. Kostomarov, I. I. Sreznevsky and others, students of the 1860s, not easy The conditions of their life, mutual assistance and self -education circles. Ostrogorsky is one of the founders of the Vasileostrovsky Free School: about his organization, universal teachers, innovative teaching methods, he also tells about his book.
The publication is supplemented by a preface, comments and a nominal index of the doctor of historical sciences L.V. Belovinsky
