The founder of the monastery near the city of Volokolamsk Igumen Joseph Sanin (1439-1515) is one of the most striking personalities in the history of medieval Russia. He left a deep mark in theology, literature, icon painting, his ideas had a strong influence on Russian culture. The main work of the ascetic Book on heretics, better known as the Enlightener, is a unique source in the history of the heresy of the Judaizers and, at the same time, the first Russian theological treatise. In this work, the “Enlightener” is considered mainly as a treatise created in an atmosphere of polemics, which overwhelmed the educated society of the Moscow state at the end of the 15th and early XVI century. The first three chapters of the book consistently analyzed the biography of the Monk Joseph Volotsky, the phenomenon of the heresies of the Judaizers, the specifics of church-state relations in the era of the reign of Ivan III. The central place is given to the study of the main work of Joseph Volotsky - “Books on heretics” (“Enlightener”) Based on a source study, the most significant facts of the textological and creative story of the “Enlightener” and the messages of Joseph Volotsky are revised. The results of the research allow you to build an original and consistent concept of the work of Joseph Volotsky, which is called a kind of “key” for Russian history and literature of the 16th century.
The book is addressed to historians, philologists, as well as a wide reader who is interested in the culture and spiritual life of Russia of the 16th century
