The book of Professor A.V. Smolin is dedicated to Evgeny Andreyevich Berens (1876-1928)-a thoroughly forgotten figure in the history of the Russian Navy. Being a senior navigator on the Varangian cruiser, during the Russo-Japanese War, Berens participated in the battle with Chemulpo and was awarded the Order of St. George of the 4th degree. But the truly talent of E. A. Berens was revealed in military-diplomatic work, which was facilitated by the knowledge of four foreign languages. Before the First World War, in 1911-1914, he was a naval agent (attache) in Germany, supplying valuable information in MGSh. After the outbreak of war, from 1915 to 1917, he was sent to work to the new ally of the Entente of Italy, where he had to make maximum efforts to save the Serbian army. After October 1917 He becomes the head of the MGSh, continuing to serve Russia. Not everything turned out smoothly in relations with the Bolsheviks, but the main idea - service to the Motherland - allowed to overcome all obstacles. E. A. Berens quite consciously, conscientiously and honestly served the Soviet regime, seeing in it the defender of the national interests of Russia
