The book considers the history of the formation, the order of acquisition, the number and degree of self-reproduction of the elite groups of Russian society (nobility, clergy, merchants, non-reliable intelligentsia) at various stages of its development and the connection of these groups with the public service, on the basis of which in the XVIII-XIX centuries. New elite groups are being formed: officers and ranks. The main attention is paid to the structure and social characteristics (sources of replenishment, national, age and educational composition) of the professional service layer in its historical development, changes in the system of ranks and official production, the procedure for receiving and undergoing service and its provision. Some general laws inherent in the development of elite groups of the Russian Empire are also considered, the results of a study of the highest stratum of the professional service layer of Russia (the material is more than 36 thousand people of “general” ranks) of the 18th and early 20th centuries
