The book is dedicated to the Russian period of the life of the great historian of antiquity Elias (Ilya) Bakerman (1897-1981) In 2010, A. Baumgarten published in English his biography. However, the important part of Bakerman’s life remained in the shadows: Baumgarten does not speak the Russian language and did not have access to Russian archives, which stored documents shed light on the events in the life of Bakerman before emigration in 1922 in this paper, on the basis of archival documents, this one is filled in by this one Lakuna, especially annoying, since the Russian period was of form-forming importance for Bakerman"s work, it was the years of youth and apprenticeship in St. Petersburg that he owes the basis of his extensive intellectual foundation.
