This book is the first scientific biography of Ekaterina Yuryevskaya, the Morganatic wife of the Russian Emperor Alexander II. Its name contains a game of words, irony regarding the designation of events 1865–1881. The established phrase Emperor"s Roman. It leaves in the shadow the second participant of Roman, Ekaterina Mikhailovna Dolgorukova, the brightest princess Yuryevskaya, whose 59 years of life passed without Alexander II. The monograph is designed to make up for this drawback, as well as dispel the numerous myths that have developed around her heroine. The study is based on correspondence. These are not only letters from Alexander and Catherine, which they exchanged for fourteen years, but also the correspondence of members of the imperial surname, representatives of the Dolgorukov family, officials of various departments, which one or another were involved in this story. The peculiarity of the sources chosen by the author leads the narrative far beyond the scope of the biographical genre. The reader will find in the book a number of plots on the situation of the Russian nobility on the eve of the abolition of serfdom, female education, the complex structure of the Russian court, the everyday life of the monarch, ideas about the family, raising children, about sexuality
